Doctor of Nursing Program

An Innovative Step for the School of Nursing: A Practice Doctorate

The School of Nursing will launch the first Doctorate of Nursing Practice program in West Texas in the summer of 2008. The DNP program will further prepare master’s level nurses to assume clinically intensive leadership careers in nursing administration, clinical practice, research and teaching.

The DNP concept was developed to meet the demand for highly prepared professionals to provide leadership in the clinical practice arena and serve as clinical faculty for the schools of nursing. The DNP program is geared toward advanced clinical practice, especially in rural communities and executive leadership in hospital and clinic settings.

The DNP program will follow the executive training model: students will come to the Lubbock campus for three or four days, three times a semester. The remainder of the coursework will be completed online and through clinical rotations and projects, allowing students who are practicing professionals to continue working in their home communities.

The program has two tracks: the advanced practitioner for nurse practitioners and the executive leadership for nurse administrators. The DNP program is approximately five semesters and is available to nursing professionals who already have a master’s degree.
